NFL 2010 week 1 follow-up: Monday Night Preview

Straight to the point.  I was 9 of 14 in terms of picking the NFL winners this week.  Sadly in terms of being the ultimate sports mastermind, I went a mere 6-6-1 on the betting spread so far in week one.  I was as good or better than picking winners over 8 of 11 so called experts on ESPN and Yahoo Sports.  I was exactly in the middle of the pack on Fox Sports and CBS's in relation to their analysts betting spread predictions and those records.  More importantly, I made three BEST BETS, predictions I thought were guaranteed, and encouraged you to bet on, we got 2 of those 3 correct.  Being new to the world of vegas odds, I now understand why they create point spreads the way they do and I will never be too bold or brash in any of my future claims.  However, I am still .500 so if you went with me, we would've lost no money this week.  Also, the Bucs game, which I feel like I should've won by picking the bucs, technically, we got a push based on my wording and the actual bet line.  I didn't pick the spread for the Saints/Vikings, but I could've been right in picking the Saints but by less than six.  It's really hard to get the winners of the games right and to place the right bets...however,  I offer no excuses, but to say that in the end, I will be the best bet in every way of picking and betting on games, and we're off to a solid start, as I plan to never have a losing record.

I also plan on getting 80% of the winners right and 60% of the bets right...we're slightly below those goals on both because the Falcons offense was pitiful and the Steelers pulled one out in overtime.  The Patriots are as great on offense, but much better on defense than I expected.  And lastly, because the 49ers are a joke, I bought into the hype a little too soon and the collective media bit off more than they could chew with that one.  The 49ers not only cost me a bet, and gave me a loser/loss, they also ruined the perfection of my BEST BET system.  Going two for three on those, and progressing forward seems good enough to start though.  Awesomely, my playoff predictions are off to a spectacular start.  Most awesomely in seeing that my greatest, boldest and best prediction of the week was completely accurate.  I had heard things about Arian Foster but I didn't know he'd be the reason the Houston Texans would beat the Indianapolis Colts.  I actually think it had more to do with that incredible offensive line.  The Texans, whom I picked to win that division, beat the Colts, whom I picked as a wildcard, so that division has started off as I predicted.  The Patriots are off to a flying start, and already people are doubting why they picked the Jets and Dolphins over these guys, as I had the Pats winning the division.   I also had the Bengals winning their division, but since they lost to another playoff team in my fantasy future, it still works out.  The New York Giants looked impressive at times, especially on defense as they won (one of my wildcard picks)  I picked the Saints to be better than the Falcons (who lost) for that division as they beat the vikings (another wildcard possibility).  The Redskins beat the Cowboys, which was the only upset in my playoff seedings, but I still thought the 'skins were possible playoff contenders and the Cowboys did look like the more talented team, so thats on par.  The Dolphins, my other wildcard team, won a tough, close game in Buffalo.  The Packers held on to defeat a great philly defense and a lightning fast Michael Vick to maintain their high standing in the pecking order.  The only concern is truly not a concern, seeing as San Francisco should bounce back from an embarassing loss in an awful division, and the Chargers look to prove they're still the best in the AFC west tonight. (with my prediction upcoming)

We will be looking to update the system of predicting the games for next week.  After a week of getting to see each team's true potential, I guarantee better predictions for week 2.  Trust the Mastermind.  Meanwhile we have two more games to put me over or under .500 in terms of the odds/bets/spread point system, and I can taste a succesful week so bad that I encourage you guys to buy the horse on the farm! WHAT!!  So how should we do this.....hmm....

Baltimore

Ravens

@                       The Jets at home are favored by two points over the Baltimore Ravens.

New York

Jets

The Jets are good, despite all of my lunatic rantings this pre-season, I was actually hoping that Darelle Revis would continue to sit out for the rest of the season so I would look even smarter about how mediocre the Jets actually were and are.  Darelle Revis changes the way the defense plays, and changes the way we all look at the Jets.  I should've seen that this new-found hollywood media hogging, fame-seeking team would reach an agreement with Revis on the last episode of Hard Knocks.  Regardless of how everyone says there are no more shut-down corners in the league, and that shut-down corners were a myth to begin with.  The truth is we haven't seen someone as talented as Darelle in ages, and so the media has chosen to not quite believe their collective eyes or his stats.  He takes your best offensive receiving weapon out of the game, case closed.  With that said, if you are a well balanced team, or a good running team, or you have two great receivers, Darelle Revis can't stop everything!  The Ravens recently added T.J Houshmanzadeh on top of acquiring Anquan Bolden from the Cardinals in the off-season.  More importantly, Ray Rice has become the third or fourth most excellent, consistent, and talented running backs in the NFL.  Joe Flacco is not only steady at Quarterback, but he's proven to be clutch.  In leading his team through five playoff games in his first two years, he's assumed the role of care-taker in the offense, whilst having the ability to create big plays when needed.  The Ravens defense and secondary is almost as bad as the Jets offense and quarterback, Mark Sanchez could be.  Nothing is definite, things could change, and players could step up (see Patriots defense) but it might come down to which team's weakness is weaker.

I love when I don't have to worry about the damn score, this an easy one for me.  I have questioned the Ravens defense, especially in the secondary but nothing has bothered me more than the media's new love for a team that had so many breaks and flukes happen last season, the N.Y. Jets.  Noone knows how cohesive this offensive line will play or how many carries Shonn Greene can handle and as we've already seen, nothing is a sure thing on the NFL's opening weekend.  Ray Lewis is angry though, and Rex Ryan has made so many opposing coaches and players upset with his big mouth, that Mark Sanchez will have to pay for checks Ryan's comments can't cash.  or something?   The Ravens front seven is so good and they must've found a few decent cornerbacks in the pre-season... and they always have an above average defense.  I'm actually trying to determine if the Ravens could be the forgotten team in my playoff predictions, at the very least, they can prove most of the media wrong about the Jets, tonight. The Ravens will win this game, it's that simple.

San Diego

Chargers

@                              The visiting Chargers are a 4-5 point favorite over the K.C. Chiefs.

Kansas City

Chiefs

San Diego has an insane amount of problems and issues to deal with.  Marcus Mcneil, their left tackle (which is the most important position when it comes to protecting the qb's blind side), is planning to hold out for the entire season due to the Charger's lack of respect in contract negotiations.  The team's top wide receiver, Vincent Jackson, will be missing at least 3 games due to suspension or being put on the PUP list, but he's also holding out while the team searches to find a fair trade...  I'm sure Phillip Rivers would rather have his biggest and fastest guy back with him on offense, Antonio Gates has to block on half of the plays.  Ryan Matthews has high expectations but he's still a rookie.  The Chiefs have some incredible coaches and coordinaters, a few good veterans/leaders, a young Matt Cassel at qb, and two proven running backs.  However, they don't seem to have enough power on the lines, or a strong/consistent enough defense to really compete with the big boys this season.

Everyone has the Chargers winning their weak AFC west division title for the fourth consecutive year, (Chris Berman has them going to the Super Bowl)  These guys are consistently consistent, but then they consistently dissapoint come playoff time.  San Diego has a tendecy to get off to a weak start, and early division rivarly games on the opposing team's field can be hard to predict. (see Cowboys @ Redskins)  The Chargers will want to prove that they are still great, and are being over-looked this time around, the Chiefs are just inferior.  San Diego will defeat The Chiefs by more than 5 points, actual factual!

NFL games for Sunday, Sep. 12. Descriptions, Odds, Predictions:

NFL Schedule   Team Descriptions    USA Today Odds    Troy’s Predictions

BEST BET  =   Predictions most likely to be correct!  Believe it!  Bet it!

Carolina Panthers

@

New York

Giants

The Panthers rid themselves of a severely underachieving quarterback (Jake Delhomme) and start the re-building process with a new unproven QB (Matt Moore), two strong veteran running backs (Deangelo Williams, Jonathon Stewart), but the Giants look to prove last year’s disappointing season was a fluke considering how many injuries plagued them. Eli Manning has become a consistent top 10 QB, Antrelle Rolle & Kenny Phillips look to improve the secondary as the Giants pass rush tries to regain elite status.

N.Y. Giants @ home are 6 Point favorites over Carolina Panthers

The beginning of the season always brings the toughest games to pick, seeing as how we have no real previous games to judge how each team plays. However, even if the Giants are only a mediocre team this year, the Panthers are the inferior team with a young QB facing pressure on the road. The N.Y. Giants will beat the Panthers by more than 6 ½ points.

Miami

Dolphins

@

Buffalo

Bills

The NFL is a league full of so much parody and turnover that we never know which teams will come from nowhere to make a post-season run on any given season. Unfortunately there are usually a few teams that everyone can agree are inferior. The Buffalo Bills fall into that category, as they decided to draft the most talented skills position player in the draft in C.J. Spiller, even though running back was the one position they were already set at. The Dolphins have a lot of young talent and potential, this should be a way to evaluate just how talented the Dolphins might be, for when they start playing quality teams.

The Dolphins are 3 Point favorites on the road against the Buffalo Bills

I don’t believe in so much of the mass media’s hype of many NFL teams. The Packers are the one team that is too good to ignore, even if I don’t want to jump on their bandwagon. However, I think I’m in the minority when it comes to considering the Miami Dolphins are not only a playoff contender, but I think they have a legitimate shot to win the division title over the Pats and Jets.  BEST BET = The Dolphins will win by more than 3 points against the Bills.

Atlanta

Falcons

@

Pittsburgh

Steelers

Wow.  I didn't even realize that yet another matchup of two high caliber playoff wannabes was taking place this weekend.   The Falcons are favored even over the Saints in a lot of analyst's minds while the Steelers are still very highly touted and respected even without their superstar Quarterback for the first four games.  Pittsburgh is known for their outstanding defense whilst Atlanta has an extremely talented offense.  The Steelers line backers are as incredible as usual, lead by James Farrior, but their secondary isn't as exceptional.  Troy Polamalu will be back and so will his big play-making ability.  The Falcons defense has been underrated for awhile, some experts see them as a top 10 defense this season.   Matt Ryan struggled in his second year, Michael Turner has gotten a lot of carries, Tony Gonzalez is getting older, and Roddy White still has to prove his consistency.... a deadly entertaining game here....

The visiting Atlanta Falcons are 1 ½ point favorites over the Pittsburgh Steelers

Who the hell is Dennis Dixon?  That is the question I would be asking if I was a casual NFL fan trying to figure out who had the edge in this one.  The fact that the Steelers were all about starting Byron Leftwich, who had just joined the team during training camp, is not a good sign for Steelers fans.  Dennis Dixon has a strong arm and tremendously fast feet, escaping the pocket and making something out of nothing is his specialty.  However, the Steelers will be asking Dixon to focus on ball security and ask him just to manage the game.  Since that doesn't appear to be his strength and he seemed prone to big turnovers during his opportunities in the pre-season, I'm leaning towards predicting a struggling Pittsburgh Steeler offense.  I still think the New Orleans Saints are a better team than the Atlanta Falcons, and I think last year showed just how mediocre the Falcons can be at times.  With that said,  The Atlanta Falcons will win by more than 1 ½ points over the Steelers.

Detroit

Lions

@

Chicago

Bears

hmmm....if I was a Chicago Bear fan who lived in Chicago and no one was at the stadium to see the Lions pull off the upset, would it have really occurred?  The Bears got their big-armed big time risk taking gun-slinging cowboy Quarterback they've been waiting for.   They've been waiting for a great QB since the days of....McM.....Kra.....Bil...... since forever?  Jay Cutler was being called the next Brett Farve before Farve was even half-way done with his career, (now of course I wonder how many quarterbacks are grandpas like he is) but is Cutler really any good at all?   It's funny how they finally get a qb they believe in, a qb with some talent, and they have YET to get him a receiver than can catch the damn ball.  I don't know if Devin Hester is still the best receiver on the team, but the fact that Devin even plays WR shows how little talent they have at the position.   The Bears defense has made improvements, Urlacher is back, but Detroit finally has an offense to reckon with.  Matthew Stafford is already considered a decent quarterback with almost as much potential as Aaron Rodgers.  He has some good wr'sJahvid Best has provided a spark in the running game.  I still think the Bears defensive line will dominate the line of scrimmage.  Meanwhile Mike Martz and Jay Cutler will air it out to their non existant receivers, wishing they were still trying to decide between Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson (guess it turns out that o-line was the problem)   I expect both of these teams to be less than mediocre, so let this intense rivalry resume!

The Homeward bound Chicago Bears are 6 ½ point favorites over the Detroit Lions

The game is in Chicago but The Lions offense has improved immensely over the last few years, and their defense may have progressed a bit too.  Yet the less than stellar Bears are not only the favorites in this game, they are nearly favored by a td.  The Lions are going to be one of those tough to beat 6-10 teams this season, hanging in a lot of games they shouldn't have the talent to compete in.  The Bears haven't been good since their Super Bowl run with Rex Grossman, who would've thought that would be their golden era?  The defense might still be great, but they're going to have to prove me wrong.   The Bears will win by less than 6 ½ points over the Detroit Lions in Chicago.  (so bet on the Lions)

Cincinnati

Bengals

@

New England

Patriots

The Cincinnati Bengals have gotten much attention this pre-season, but not in the same way that the other hyped teams have.  The Bengals still had some buzz over their surprisingly terrific season last year, and Ochocinco's big continuously running big mouth (along with his guest appearance on the Squidbillies, and constant tweeting), when they acquired long time locker room destroyer, Terrell Owens.  With Ochocinco and T.O. having their own shows on VH1, the Bengals and their gang of misfits have been extremely intriguing.  Not enough people know that the Bengals finally played defense last year, not just good, but great Defense.  They caused turnovers and they shut teams running games down.  Cedric Benson, who had previously struggled for the Bears, became a near elite running back.  Now that they can run it down your throat, with the added weapons of Jermaine Grisham and T.O., the Bengals are being overlooked.  Experts are still picking the Steelers and even more people have decided the Ravens are now a team to beat, even without Ed Reed or a secondary.  The Patriots have a million question marks on defense, Ty Warren seemed to be the best pass rusher they had left before he got injured for the season.  Their secondary is filled with a bunch of quick young guys who seem to have talent but lack too much experience.  Bill Belichik seems to get his defense to at least step up to mediocrity and we all know that with Tom Brady trusting his knee again, the Patriots offense could be epic, if not as legendary as it was a few years ago.  Randy Moss will be playing hard for his last big contract, Edelman will work his way into being a consistent target and the Pats finally have tight ends that can block AND make big plays down the field (see Robin Gronkowski)  Flip a coin on this one.

The New England Patriots are favored to beat the Bengals by 4½ points in Cincy.

Gee wilikers Batman, we've got a tough one.  I like the Bengals a little more than everyone else seems to.  Likewise, I respect the Patriots slightly more than everyone else seems to.  If I think the Pats are gonna lose their first game, then there's no way I should pick the Jets to beat the Ravens, that should paint me into a nice corner.  Every sports talk and radio show host think the Ravens and Steelers pose a bigger threat as Super Bowl contenders than do the Bengals, while I have them as a possible Super Bowl favorite.  I love the Patriots at home, with something to prove, coming off of a year in which they were decimated in the first round of the playoffs.  No matter how good the Bengals defense looked last year, their secondary just doesnt seem to have enough talent to stop all of Tom Brady's weapons.   The Bengals might look to run the ball more than anyone expects, using T.O. as more of a decoy in the first game, and the Pats defense looks incredibly vulnerable.  I like the Patriots but not by 4 ½ points, so I might as well go the other way with it:  The Cincinnati Bengals will defeat the Pats in New England.

Cleveland

Browns

@

Tampa Bay

Buccaneers

Woa, who cares?  These teams are bad, the bucs are one of the worst teams in the NFL, and the browns are not that far ahead of them.  Whoever decided to put together such great matches in the first games of the season didn't realize that would mean the two worst teams in each conference would face off.   The Lions are a little better, the Rams are better, but are the Browns any good at all?  These Browns faught hard to keep Eric Mangini's job for him at the end of last season, but the lack of talent they posess is overwhelming (or underwhelming if you prefer)  Josh Freeman looks like he might be an interesting young qb to keep an eye on but even his health is questionable for the Bucs.  If I wasn't researching these games at the moment and you asked me to name more than 3 players on each team, I'm not sure I could do it.  Other than quarterbacks, I dont think I can name anyone (besides James Harrison, rb of the Browns from fantasy football)  Don't even watch this one.

Tampa Bay @ home is favored to beat the Cleveland Browns by 3 points.

uhh...I still don't care.  The Browns got Colt Mccoy who they won't be using, so Jake Delhomme looks to go for the record for most ints in a season...   The Bucs defense has historically been good, and the state of Florida loves its football, so that is the only reason I can come up with to say...  The Tampa Buccaneers will win by more than 3 points vs. the Cleveland Browns.

Denver

Broncos

@

Jacksonville

Jaguars

In a game between two teams who seem to hover around .500 each and every year for the past few seasons, and also seem to compete to the fullest with each and every opponent.  The Broncos fought the Chargers to the final game of the season two years ago, and they got off to an amazing start last year before eventually falling apart.  Kyle Orton has been a steady and stable QB by all accounts, and the broncos still boast good offensive and defensive lines along with a veteran secondary.  Jacksonville manages to beat the colts once in awhile and comes close to a playoff spot every year despite seemingly having inferior personnel.  Mo Jo Drew is still a big time fantasy back who's very fun to watch and their offensive line is still nasty as hell.  The Broncos are in such a poor division that if they beat their division rivals they would have a chance to overtake the Chargers.  Tim Tebow has been the story, other than the fact that HE is a story, because they have yet to win in these last few season even when the Chargers have struggled mightily.  The Jaguars don't have a chance, they don't have any fans, and they're in the toughest division in football (other than the AFC north I suppose), both teams will fight to be average.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are favored to win by 3 points over the Denver Broncos.

Because I personally believe that the AFC west is the second worst division in the NFL (second to the NFC west) and that the AFC south is even tougher than the north...I almost feel like those facts have backed me into a position to pick the Jags out of righteousness.  The fans will pack the stadium to get a glimpse of Tim Tebow not even breaking a sweat sitting on the pine.  I'm sure there will be times he will be acting like a cheerleader and signing autographs... I've recently re-thought my position on the Jags in general.  Just because they're in a great division doesnt mean they're going to be great.  I guess they could win but not by MORE than 3 points.  The Jacksonville Jags will bury the bucking Broncos by LESS than 3 points.  (or the broncos could win?)

Indianapolis

Colts

@

Houston

Texans

The Colts were one of, if not, the best team(s) last season....and the season before that...and for a few seasons prior....the year before that they were pretty good....and even six years ago I think they may have won about 12 or 13 games.  Oh wait that's right, they are great every season, just like the Patriots are when Tom Brady is healthy (Should I go back and change that pick now?) because teams that have great quarterbacks and great coaches and solid defenses win the Super Bowl every season.  It's not Peyton's fault that the Saints were the team of destiny last year, and the Saint's defense was just oppurtune enough to pull out an impressive victory in the Super Bowl.  For how good Peyton Manning has been throughout his career (for how beyond greatly good he's been) during the regular season...he seems to be the opposite of his brother,  Great every time, and all the time except in the clutchest of moments when the season is on the line.  Eli on the other hand, is pretty much just above average and fairly consistent until crunch time, until the 2 minute drill, until the Super Bowl is up for grabs, and that's when he does his best.  Anyway the Texans are my team to surprise everyone and win the division.  With those great young linebackers,  Matt Schaub to Andre Johnson...and a smart coach...this could be their year.  The Colts can't run, and Bob Sanders is overrated.  So here goes nothing, if the Texans are finally going to at least make it to the post-season this year, they have to prove they can beat the best, and not just come painfully close.

The Indianapolis Colts are 2 point favorites over the Houston Texans in Houston, Texas.

I'm not making it up, it seems as though many people think the Texans are going to be very good this season, or at least they will be betting on the Texans to win this game, otherwise the Colts would normally be favored by at least 4-5 points despite being on the road.  The Colts are always so much more efficient early on in the season because the core group of players has been together for so long, but they are missing their pro bowl starting center, Jeff Saturday.  Look for the Houston Texans to make a statement in this one, they will finally prove that they have what it takes to win the closest games against the strongest competition.  The Houston Texans @ home will defeat the Indianapolis Colts.

Oakland

Raiders

@

Tennessee

Titans

Many experts have decided to go out on the same limb and pick the Raiders to improve dramatically this season.  Some have them at 6-10, others at 8-8, and of course the craziest, yet most listened to of sports analysts have them making it to the post-season (does that mean the Chargers aren't going to make it?)....for that matter....(did Chris Berman actually pick the Chargers to make the Super Bowl....this year?)  Anyway, when everyone goes out on the same tree limb...that gosh darn tree limb breaks and all those predictions go down like a falling branch.  Jason Campbell is like the better version of Jamarcus Russell, Jamarus Russell was the worst version of an NFL Quarterback anyone has ever seen.  He had all of the physical tools and none of mental capacity.  Campbell is kind of the opposite, he's a smart qb, accurate on short throws, but with only mediocre talent.  The Titans are going to continue to surprise as they have at the end of the last few seasons.  All Vince Young does is win, and Chris Johnson will get at least another 1800 yards barring injury.  The Titans don't have anymore big names on their defense but Jeff Fisher is such a good strategical coach.

The Tennessee Titans are favored to beat the Oakland Raiders by 6 points in TeNeSsEe.

Well, I still feel like praising the AFC south, I even said the jags would win by less than 3 points, those close games are even harder to pull out.  It's not that I think the Raiders are going to be horrible, they have a great corner back, linebacker, D-lineman, they look stronger, especially on defense.  Now that they have a competent Quarterback, they hopefully have enough of an o-line for Darren Mcfadden to finally accumulate some yards.  The Titans are young, fast, brash with a bit of attitude, I dont know how good they are yet, but this game should give everyone an initial idea.  The Titans will destroy the Oakland Raiders by way more than 6 points.

Green Bay

Packers

@

Philadelphia

Eagles

The Packers are the sexy pick to be Super Bowl bound.  The cheeseheads have never been more excited, except for maybe right before Brett Farve blew another big playoff game in so many games over the last decade.  I'm not even sure that during the Farve era, unless we're talking after Farve's only Super Bowl winning team, that Packers fans have been this ecstatic about an upcoming season.  Everyone is on board now it's time for this team to put up or shut up.  Despite the insane hype of Green Bay's chances in the NFC, along with many predictions of Post-season or even Super Bowl Glory, now that the first game is upon us, everyone seems very hesistant about the Pack.  Aaron Rodgers is the real deal, let me assure you, working with a limited o-line and an overrated recieving corps, he's put up numbers comparable to those of a young...Joe Montana?  Its been a long time since someone looked this good, this soon, its possible all those years studying under Farve were helpful afterall.  The Eagles got rid of Mcnabb and Westbrook because they went from a playoff team every season, to an average - slightly above average team the last couple season.  It was time to move on, even on defense, from the likes of Dawkins, as Lito Shephard has gotten older.  Kevin Kolb is the first link in re-building the chain of post-season runs the Eagles are used to, the NFC east is still one of the best divisions and the Eagles are still pretty talented.  They have two explosive young receivers and a veteran tight end in Brett Celek.  A great week one match.

The Green Bay Packers are favored to beat the Philadelphia Eagles by 3 points in Philly.

Here's the deal, I'm part of the in-crowd on this one, The Packers are one of the most talented teams in the NFL.  I have no idea if they're ready to be successful in the most meaningful games but I know how good they can be in this one.  The Eagles offense is too young and their defense isn't as talented as it once was.  BEST BET = The Green Bay Packers will defeat the inexperienced Eagles in Philadelphia by more than 3 points.  ....   ...  ...  ...  by more than 7 points, for that matter.

San Francisco

49ers

@

Seattle

Seahawks

This is one of the few games this week that I could care less about.  I'm excited about the 49ers return to prominence and support their new found reign as the NFC west division champions starting this season.  I know we've gone over how bad the Bucs and Browns may be, but the Seahawks astound me with awful.  They're still holding onto their old and fading and injury plagued inconsistent veteran QB in Matt Hasselback.  They got rid of T.J. Houshmanzadeh, their only decent offensive weapon, Leon Washington is coming off serious injury and Pete Carroll has already show how crappy he can be as an NFL head coach on the N.E. Patriots before the great USC job fell in his lap.  Alex Smith is finally showing up and acting as if he belongs in the league, Frank Gore has been a good running back for a few seasons now, and Vernon Davis may be the beginning of the new wave of great recieving tight ends in the NFL.  The 49ers defense plays incredibly with the intensity of a brilliant new head coach in Mike Singletary, and Patrick Willis may very well be the best defensive player in the league.

The San Francisco 49ers are 3 point favorites over the Seahawks in Seattle.

This is the biggest joke of all the odds the oddsmakers have made in terms of oddsmaking odds for this entire first week of games.  I dont care if they play on the former planet Pluto or in a galaxy roller rink arena....or in Thailand...  The niners are far and away superior.  The only thing that could prevent this from being a complete blowout is rust and anxiety on the part of the 49ers which can't be expected with a coach so strong-willed.  The Seahawks existance at the moment makes me sick to my Seattle coffee cup core, and as depressed as the sunniest rainy day in the Northwest.   Bestest Best Bet = The Niners will defeat Seattle's 'Hawks by a gigantic margin.  49ers over Seahawks by more than 3 points.

Arizona

Cardinals

@

St.Louis

Rams

The Cardinals took on the identity of their hall of fame quarterback, Kurt Warner.  Even people who had lost respect for Warner's ability over the years since his days with the Rams were astounded at his remarkable turnaround, taking an inferior Cardinals team to the Super Bowl.  Not only did the Cardinals lose their best player in Kurt Warner, not only did they trade away their second best receiver in Anquan Boldin, Not only did they lose a great safety in Antrell Rolle, but they also lost the leading tackler and best linebacker on their defense in Karlos Dansby.  Sam Bradford is going to be pretty good, just not this quickly.  The Rams have acquired some defensive talent over the last few drafts, but their secondary is still pretty weak and they need more of a pass rush.  Stephen Jackson will take some of the pressure off of the offensive line...but losing Donnie Avery, I think Bradford doesnt have many options to throw to.  I hate both these teams, I know I've said that a few times, but for every new good team, there needs to be some teams that fall off and having disturbingly bad records...  Ultimately, I think the Rams might be better off and will finish ahead of the Cardinals and they are playing this one in St. louis

The Arizona Cardinals are favored to win this game by 3 points over the Rams in the lou.

I have wished and washed, not sure where to go with this pick.  Finally, vegas and USA today's Danny Sheridan have stumped me.  They've put a number in between these teams that I can't decide which side to go with.  Larry Fitzgerald has had some nagging injury problems, like he seems to have had the last few seasons.  I dont like the Rams but  I like the Cardinals much less and so I've finally convinced myself to go with my gut.  The St. louis Rams @ home will defeat the Arizona Cardinals.  Straight-up

Dallas

Cowboys

@

Washington

Redskins

A good ol' fashioned NFC east battle of the roughest, toughest, rootinest, tootinest.... Cowboys and Native Americans just like when our parents were kids.  A battle of blood and guts and raw emotion spilling over into angry penalty-induced outbursts on the field.  The Cowboys and Donovan Mcnabb never got along before, but the rivalry will never be more intense than when these two teams begin the season in D.C.  The Redskins with a good-great coach trying to prove he can win without Elway, and a good quarterback trying to prove he can win in the biggest games.  The expectations only get higher each year that Dallas only seems to get better.  They've kept their playoff caliber roster together while adding the most talented receiver in the draft, Dez Bryant.  They have three solid running backs who can make explosive plays happen and they don't even like to run the ball.  Their O-line has been overrated in recent years but they've injected it with youth.  The Redskins defense has been better than good despite the team's problems on offense.  Haynesworth is a problem with his attitude but when he decides to play, he can make a huge difference on the field.  This game is always competitive even when both teams are bad, or one is far superior than the other.  The Cowboys still put forth a solid defensive effort to go along with a tremendous offense.

The Dallas Cowboys are visiting Washington and 3½ point favorites over the 'Skins.

These games tend to be close so I'm not too sure about the final score, but I am certain that the Dallas Cowboys are not going to want to dissapoint their fans early on this season.  Washington should get it together for the second half, when their chemistry is better but look for me to pick against them until then, eventually making them an 8-8 or 9-7 type of team.  D-mcnabb has ankle concerns, fat Albert has endurance concerns and Clinton Portis is too old to be as productive as he was under Shanahan for the Broncos.  I foresee the Dallas Cowboys beating their arch rival Washington Redskins by more than 3½ points

Those are sunday's NFL season opening games...  Look for prediction results, game overviews/analysis and Monday Night NFL matchup previews Sunday evening into Monday Morning.  Have a good day in Fantasy Football everyone!!

Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints, Who to bet 1,000,000 dollars on!

First off, for the record, I have wanted and waited and been willing to pick the Vikings to win this game all week long.  I don't like the fact that Sydney Rice is going to miss the first half of the season, but before last year, nobody even though Rice was that good.  Brett Farve is known for making mediocre or slightly above average receivers look much better than their talent level.  Everyone knows that the Vikings have an insane pass rush/D-line and their secondary isn't bad either.  Adrian Peterson has had fumbling issues, but he always puts up huge stats, and he's especially dangerous with fresh legs in the beginning of the season.  I feel like white guys in general have not been given a chance as rbs in the league very much anymore (as with black quarterbacks), but that Stanford's standout Toby Gerhart is going to be great as the change of pace back and/or goal line type of back.  Minnesota's offensive line, lead by Steve Hutchinson has to play extremely well in the beginning of the season while Brett Farve tries to work his way back into football player shape.  There is so much surrounding talent, but more than that, I'm sure the Vikings organization thought they were the most talented team last year, as did I.   They will be looking to get revenge on a team that tried to destroy Brett Farve and got every lucky break last year in the NFC championship game.

With the will, and the talent, and this last paragraph I've written, you would think I would think that the Vikings are going to win this season opener.  I want the Vikings to win, I'm a fan of certain players on the team, they will be determined, angry, and focused, and in my opinion, the Vikings definitely have the better defense.  They even have an edge in terms of my evaluation of each team's overall talent.  However, the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl last year, and be it dumb luck or divine intervention, they're still a hell of a football team.  I thought the Colts were better too, but the Saints are so good at creating turnovers and they have a quarterback who has a knack for pulling off the big play.  The Saints have so many weapons on offense, but their defense will be missing a critical piece in Darren Sharper (who's injured) who was so strong as the leader of that much improved defensive effort.  The SuperBowl winner has won next season's opening game for nine straight seasons but will it continue?  I dont like picking the favorite, or going with the popular team... and as much as I know the Vikings REALLY want this game, and Farve really wants to assure his team that they will be as good as last year...  The Vikings defense can't play as well as last year, Brett Farve has never had as good a year as last, and never will again.  Brett Farve is finally going to feel his age throughout the season and I foresee some rough patches, although they are still going to vy for a playoff spot.  AP has to step up and be what he was to the Vikings just two years ago.  He has to be the prominent part of the offense, the juggernaut, the best player on the team, all things that people forget he may in fact still be capable of.  I predict this game will be ridiculous to the maximum.  and that my friend, is that.

Saints are going to take this one though.   The New Orleans Saints will defeat the Minnesota Vikings.  Hallelujah for a new NFL season!!!!!

Today - Welcome back to Revis Island ... Tonight - Boise St. Vs. Virginia Tech ... And my triumphant & bold prediction!!

Darelle Revis + The Jets = $32 million gauranteed

Darelle Revis finally ended his hold out.  He was looking for somewhere in the neighborhood of 14-16 million dollars per year and he settled for 11 1/2 million per...  Does that mean Darelle Revis was just wasting everybody's time?  Not exactly.   Guaranteed dollars is what every NFL player wants, seeing as how most of them can be cut at any time, after one bad performance, with no contractual assurances.  The Jets were originally offering somewhere around $20 million guaranteed and $120 mil over 10 years.  Although Darelle Revis technically now makes less money per year than he would've if he initally accepted the offer, He gets the guaranteed money he wanted, and with a shorter contract, 46 mil per 4 years, he can expect another big pay-day at the age of 28 if he continues to be half as good as he was last year.

Most fans, be it due to the HBO program "Hard Knocks", the Jets coach Rex Ryan's arrogance, or the undeserved attention the team has brought upon itself,  Many sports experts and analysts as with Jet fans and a few bandwagon jumpers thought the Jets were already a SuperBowl contender and having Revis back just puts icing on the championship cake.  While a majority of fans have become less than joyed by the team's shennanigans, the Cowboy's may or may not still be America's team, but the Jets are absolutely America's most hated team.  The worst thing is though, that even most of the haters still view the New York Jets as at least a playoff team.   It seems that Revis has become much less relevant to the sports media's actual opinion of the team's talent, and it's now more of a final chapter, a happy ending for a television program.  So many people are already so high on the Jets that Darelle Revis just might put them through the roof.  The truth is their cornerback position was already fairly talented without him, the overall defense already had good players, depth, and is well-coached. ( damn you, Rex)

They are now definitely a top 5 defensive unit and quite possibly even the best in the NFL.   Guess what fanboy, bandwagon, Rex Ryan jiggling, Revis-island vacationing, Pretty boy quarterback worshipping, LT whining,  JET lovers!!!   Their offense still sucks, Qbs take a step back in their sophmore year usually and Sanchez can't get much worse.  They had such a mediocre regular season in 2009 that their own coach (Yes, Rex) said they weren't going to make the playoffs, they won two games against two teams not playing hard or using their starters, while other wildcard hopefuls failed miserably and handed the Jets a chance to make a post-season they had no business getting into.  It is FACT, that Mark Sanchez played above average in the 3 playoff games, he didn't even choke too bad against the likes of Peyton Manning, so it is quite possible Mark Sanchez has been blessed with the ability or capability of being clutch.  In the end, the New York Jets didn't make it to the Super Bowl because of their strength, the defense.  It turns out that when a team finally learns how to handle some of those blitz packages, and has a QB with the intelligence of Peyton, that Jets defense doesn't look so impenetrable.  More importantly than that, Mark Sanchez isn't going to transform into a Superstar quarterback overnight, I actually think that he'll take a step forward this year, throw 15 tds, and 15 ints...with an 82.0  qb rating.  He'll have average stats, coupled with some big moments.  Like I said, the defense will be great.  With a depleted offensive line, an unproven running game, wide receivers with attitudes, issues, and too many dropped passes, and a young, mistake-prone Quarterback, The jets can still be a good team, but not a great team, and I dont think they're a playoff team for that matter.   The Patriots offense is more incredible than the Jets defense...

Darelle Revis is insane, he became the best cornerback in the game, in one season.  He will take the opponent's best receiver completely out of the game.  Unfortunately, most of the great teams in the NFL these days are like the Saints, Colts, Packers, or Patriots, they have Great Qbs who have plenty of receiving options.  Tom Brady will be back for real this year, and every opponent's defense will be taking the Jets offense (because of the defense) much more seriously ( not that they were necessarily taken lightly)  There will be more game planning for that agressive defense, more 3 and 5-step drop back and quick passes.  (Dink N' Dunk, hit n' run, west coast style offense)  Revis matters, he allows more blitzing, he acts as a double-team by himself, and quarterbacks don't even want to look in his direction, but does he matter enough to get the Jets to the playoffs and/or Super Bowl?   Quite frankly  the answer to that question is.....probably not....and....definitely not.

Revis + The Jets = more hype, more hope, no chance.

Predicters and Prognosticaters Behold!!!    I was an insane 50% correct with my college picks for saturday.   However, I failed to mention I am a fan of both Uconn & Notre Dame football and unlike professional sports, my lack of knowledge in terms of the talent both they had and that of their opponents was apparent.  Thusly I had no idea Rich Rodriguez was in the midst of making Michigan a respectable football school yet again.  I should've recognized that no matter how badly I want my local school (Uconn) to succeed, and no matter how many analysts predicted them to win the Big East Conference this season, schools with the legacy and prestige of Michigan will more often than not tend to acquire superior talent than schools that have yet to make a name for themselves in the sport.  One solid thing we have learned is that of honesty, I will always accept responsibilty for my failure to be psychic at times.  However, I am still a sports genius (a mastermind, if you will)  and more often that not, I will know the outcome of seasons and individual games because of my vast knowledge of so many aspects involved!!  Try finding that declaration by any sane sports writer.  You won't be able to.  Uconn had some untimely turnovers, and the refs had some trouble spotting the ball correctly throughout the game.  However, Michigan deserved to win, and it is such a shame that defeating Connecticut will be the highlight of their slightly better than mediocre season.

Adam Schefter of ESPN NFL draft expertise fame, was on Mike and Mike in the morning on ESPN radio (free advertising for ESPN all the time)  as a guest host.  Normally this would not be very exciting news, as he had already announced Darelle Revis was ending his holdout with the Jets. Doesn't he normally just update us on contract negotiations and find out which player an NFL team is actually picking, moments before they actually pick them, a thrilling prospect.  Granted, I know it requires long hours, finding and establishing connections with general managers and coaches,  and finding sources and believing in them enough to put your reputation on the line.   He is one of the few personalties on ESPN with an individual perspective, not only did he go on a tour bus to many NFL training camps this summer, but he has access to all sorts of inside access and information.  So it was interesting to note that his predictions were bizarrely similiar to mine, although I became frightened people would think I was stealing ideas from him and putting my own twist on them.  He is the only person I've seen to also state the Jets are not a playoff team, and the Giants are, that was my original bold claim for gosh sakes!!!  I like the Texans...the Bengals...as does he, he's unsure of the Saints and Vikings playoff chances, as am I.

Fortunately for me, he befuddled me by saying the Dallas Cowboys were NOT a playoff team.  For a team with such a strong defense, with a superstar linebacker in Demarcus Ware, enough good running backs to control the clock and a potentially great Quarterback and recieving corps, a team that has essentially kept the same personnel from last season, a season in which they won the division, not to mention Romo and Wade phillips won their first playoff game against a tough Philadelphia team.  To think Philadelphia and Washington will make the playoffs ahead of the Cowboys is absurd to me.  Schefter's inability to decide between the Bengals, Steelers, and Ravens in the AFC north and calling that possibly the best division in the NFL was his other mistake.  The Steelers defense has good-great players returning from injury (Troy Palamalu, Ziggy Hood) but people under-estimating how important it is for Ben to have a number one reciever.  Santonio Holmes finally began to claim that spot, and helped the steelers win a Super Bowl, he's gone (traded to those mighty JETS)  Ben likes a big target that he has chemistry with.  Heinz Ward continues to get older and plays too hard at his age for us not to expect nagging smaller injuries or worse.  Willie Parker is no longer on the team and Mendenhall isn't going to be able to handle too many carries.  Their offensive line still has question marks, the Steelers remind me of the Jets, not enough offense.  At least they'll be getting their franchise quarterback back in time for game 5, but it might already be too late.  The Ravens defense isn't the same as it has been, Ray Lewis is bound to lose a step each year, and even when Ed Reed comes back, he won't be the turnover machine he has been.  Their secondary is one of the worst in the league.   I don't even trust Joe Flacco and those washed up receivers at all, and Ray Rice can't win the division by himself.  To me, that makes the Bengals, behind the underrated, consistent Carson Palmer, the up and coming Cedric Benson, and the new toy at tight end, Jermaine Grisham, the easy favorite and winner of the AFC north division.  Of course, those two loud-mouth wide-outs will annoy so many defenders with their collective lunacy, and unexpected play...  The Bengals were a top 10 defense last year, they don't allow big plays, they can make turnovers, they dont have big names, but they have good team chemistry and a great coach in Dom Capers.  Beyond that, I have previously stated, with four 500. and above teams, three serious playoff contenders, two championship hopefuls and one super power in Indianapolis, the AFC north is the ultimate division.  Even Adam Schefter is picking the Texans and Colts to be post-season bound...  So schefty, don't get it twisted, you were so close to knowing what you were talking about, but I am still 100% right in my beliefs according to myself!

Also it has come to my attention, according to multiple sources, as to not give ESPN one more mention in this blog (damn it) that every year for the last fourteen years there have been at least FIVE new playoff teams, in other words, FIVE different playoff teams from the previous season.  There were six last year and it means that pretty much undoubtedly, inevitably there will be at least a few teams that YOU or THEY weren't expecting to make it into the post-season, that will.   I did not know this, or run across this fact during my evalutating research before determining my NFL playoff predicitions, and yet my predictions perfectly fit under those guidelines.  I have five new teams in this year,  the Giants, Texans, Dolphins, 49ers, and as of now I'm leaning towards putting the skins in ahead of the Vikings.  Although with the eagles still being a decent team, it seems unlikely that two NFC east teams would get in.  The Falcons, on the other hand, be it as division winners in front of New Orleans, or as one of the wildcard teams are starting to swing me their way.  Screw that, Jared Allen and Adrian Peterson are not going to let it happen, I dont care if Brett Farve gets hurt in week ONE and Tavaris Jackson becomes the starter, the Vikings will get that sixth seed.  So.  With that thought.  My thought is that either...only four new teams get in this year, or I have to change my mind.    The Falcons and Redskins are the two teams that could throw off the bold prediction I'm about to make, I dont believe in the Steelers or Ravens, so believe it or not, The Jets and Titans are the two new teams that mess things up in the AFC...  but... I dont see it.    The NFL has so much parody and so many teams with losing records can turn it around at any moment.   But this year, teams like the Lions, Bears, Rams, Seahawks, Browns, Jaguars, Bills, Chiefs and Raiders are STILL, absolutley, 1000%  not good enough in my opinion.  And when 8 or 9 or 10 teams are DEFINITELY not going to make the playoffs AGAIN, even though there will still be so many changes in division winners and seeding, I must do this...

Bold Prediction #1 :   There will NOT be FIVE new (teams that didnt make it last year) teams to make the playoffs this year.  There may in fact only be, and I predict that there will be, four.

Boiste State is from the WAC ( not wack)  They have been uber impressive in the BCS Bowl games over the last several seasons.  They don't always face the most exciting, established, powerhouse, big name competition that the big schools in the big conferences do, but they are one of the best programs in the Nation.  Their head coach and scouting is exceptional, and I'm almost positive they're able to recruit top-notch talent just by showing off their pretty blue field.   Virginia Tech is always a contender in the ACC and usually in the top 10 for most, if not some of the season, in recent years.  Tonight's matchup is HUGE, because a team from a smaller conference, from nowheresville, Idaho... Boise St. could be on there way to becoming the first team from a non-BCS conference to play for a national championship.  It all starts tonight and they will not let their fans down, Virginia Tech is always ready for a good opponent, but for once, I think the smaller school has the edge in talent, on both sides of the football.  Look for Virginia Tech sophmores and freshman to be nervous in the first half....

Bold Prediction #2:   Boise St defeats Virginia Tech

College football is back!!! But the NFL is better!!!

Uconn & Notre Dame will win today against Michigan & Purdue respectively.  I guarantee it!!    And if I'm wrong, well then its because the NFL is so much more interesting to me.   I know the crowds, the bands, and the college atmosphere for a big time college football game is unlike anything else, and I would certainly rather go to and participate in a college game than a pro game...  But the level of talent and sophistication in the NFL can not be matched.  The defensive schemes and strategies are so complicated and challenging.  Everything is at a different level of intensity each week, even more so in rivarly and playoff games.  College football is fun, its exciting to root for or against guys like Tim Tebow who seem like their bigger than life in their uniforms.  Also the level of fan dedication can be so high for even the smaller schools.  However, nothing beats what the NFL has to offer, the personalties, the strategy, the violent hits and the video game and fantasy teams to make you feel more apart of the experience.   This weekend, college football provides the appetizer for us, as we await the spectacle they call the National Football League.

Quick Hits!

- I love watching and following sports.  I love ESPN and local networks.  And even though I disagree with so many things that have recently gone on.  My anger is all in jest, and my opinion is fun for everyone. (except people who take sports too seriously)

- The afc east is vastly overrated.  The nfc east is superbly underrated.

- Along with ESPN's ridiculous power rankings, ESPN's Jon Ritchie implied that every nfc east team has gotten worse this morning on ESPN's First Take.   So the redskins got Donovan and Shannahan, Haynesworth is mad as hell and clintin portis is fighting for the starting job, and the redskins aren't as good as they were with Jason Campbell?  Are you KIDDING me?

- Roger Clemons and Barry Bonds belong in the hall of fame.  Put an asterik or explain how they cheated if you want.  With spitballs, spiked slides, corked bats, and various cheating scandals, Major League Baseball has never been 100% clean, and like the rest of society, never will be.  The media shouldn't be covering these boring, irrelevant (to those of us who don't care if a moron wants to go to prison to defend his lies) sports stars off-field battles with arrogance and ignorance.  If the majority of MLB players decide former players who have cheated should not go to the HOF, that's a different story...but baseball writers across the country shouldn't even have a vote.

-  The Minnesota Vikings are a questionable contender.   And I dont mean a Super Bowl contender.  Even the lowliest of fools can agree the packers look to be awesome this year.  Farve is old, Farve is hurt, Farve will never be able to repeat the insanely incredible career year stats he put up last year.  Hopefully for them, the Giants, Redskins, or Falcons don't steal those two wildcard playoff spots.

-  The Jets have no offense.  Mark Sanchez wasn't good last year, how do people not get this?  The Patriots have no defense.  There pass rush looks to be even worse without Ty Warren (starting DE) and the corners are all young'ns who have yet to prove anything.  The Dolphins are too young and inexperienced, and their overall talent is undetermined.  So does that mean I'm picking the Bills to win the division? pfft....   I've flopped back and forth on this for weeks in my own head and with my friends...so I pick the Pats....no wait, the Dolphins....hmm...

-  The dolphins will win the AFC east... The Pats will win the wildcard because the jets lose to both teams twice.  That is four wins right there.   I figure if I say both teams make the playoffs, I have a cop out

-  The AFC south is the greatest division I've seen in years, every team is competitive.  Even the Jacksonville Jaguars (who have no fans) are always a 500. team who competes hard against teams with superior talent.  I like the Titans and Texans for the other wild card spot, but they're all so good that I dont think there's any way the colts will win 12 games again.  give um 10 or 11 and a playoff spot.

-  The colts have proven time and time again through performance and record that they don't need Bob Sanders.  I have no idea if that makes him overrated, but I do know that Troy Polamalu is 10x more important to the Steelers.

-  C.J. Spiller, Thomas Jones, Ahmad Bradshaw, Johnny Knox, and Hakeem Nicks, these are my sleeper picks for fantasy football.

- Speaking of which, this year your strategy should be this:  Unless you have the first two picks and can select Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson, do not take a running back until the 5th or 6th round.  While everyone is else is scrambling to try and put together a great running back core, you can get a great qb in the first or second round and a great te in the 4th or 5th round.   Even two of the better running backs in fantasy, Jonathon Stewart and Deangelo Williams, play on the same team.  Split carries mean less yards and you'll never know which guy will score the tds on any given sunday.   So pick a good solid running back when you can, but be cautious, pick a guy who will get carries, and if there's any doubt, pick a WR.

- Jacoby Ellsbury really was hurt, you insensitive Red Sox fans!!!

- Now Pedroia needs surgery because of the doctors... the Red Sox should've realized they were out of it the moment Youklis was out for the year.  Sometimes you try to do whatever you can to get into the playoffs because you know your pitching staff can win you a world series, and sometimes you know when to fold them.   If Boston doesn't make some signifigant off-season moves and/or at least hold onto the free agent players they're about to lose, then I dont care how good their pitching might be, they will finish third again.

- UFC and MMA is exciting, it gets more and more popular each year, but noone wants to see two dudes on the ground wrestling each other...remove that from the equation and then we're talking violent mayhem.

-  Skip Bayless of ESPN has always said Lebron James should never shoot the ball and that Tiger Woods has no competition.  So let's clear up the facts.  Lebron James has a decent mid-range to close-range game and shot.  Lebron is capable of making 3-pointers and seems to get more consistent each season.  If Lebron took it to the basket on every play, defenders wouldn't need to respect his shot, and he would wear himself out in the first half.   Phil Mickelson has finished second too many times to say that Tiger has no competition.  Way more importantly than that, you can't compare two different eras, noone has any idea how Jack Nicklaus would've matched up with today's golfers.  Jack Nicklaus may have been as good as Phil or Vijay Singh...its impossible to know, so based on statistics and facts (winning percentage, top ten finishes, age, grand slam events) , Tiger woods is the best golfer of all time, the end.

- I've thought about how good Michael Jordan would be in today's NBA world because of nba2k11's upcoming NBA game that focuses on the superstar.  Michael Jordan is considered better at his sport than Babe Ruth was at his. (which I find ridiculous, the Babe was even a spectacular pitcher)  Even so, and even though Michael Jordan only played 10-20 years ago... you STILL can't compare eras.  Players today are bigger, faster and stronger.  I would never say that Lebron James is better than Michael Jordan (especially at this point in his career) but Michael Jordan never faced a player like Lebron.  Jordan didnt have to face the faster 6'8 defensive specialists that exist today.  Michael Jordan could still be the best today, but I'm sure his numbers would diminish, his championship runs would be as challenging if not more so and everything would be different.  Team basketball is obviously a world-wide phenomenon and every player today in the U.S.A. plays in a one on one NBA universe.  Michael Jordan is still probably the best NBA player in history ( not in general sports, think Gretzsky, Ruth, Federer, Woods) but possibly not (think Kobe, Shaq (no?) hmm... Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain)  You can't argue the past when you never saw what happened, so we'll never know the true scale of sports legends, but it's fun to speculate.

- Now that Lebron has joined the dark side... (I still think the Dallas Mavericks should've beat D-wade, Shaq and the Heat in the '06 NBA finals, stupid refs)  and now that Lebron has become almost as universally despised as Kobe Bryant once was.  I think most of America is rooting for the Celtics, but those of us realists who foresee a Heat vs. Lakers 2011 NBA finals...  it's time to root for Kobe's team.

-  The Bulls needed shooters and an inside scorer/rebounder to become a championship contender again.  With the acquistions of Boozer, Korver, Watson, Brewer and others, the Bulls have reached the level of the Atlanta Hawks.  I only say this, thinking the Hawks will finally get better this year in the playoffs, because their inside guys, Horford and Smith, will keep getting better.   The Celtics are still a fifth playoff seed at best  even with the signings of  Jermaine Oneal, Shaq and Delonte West (shout out to Lebron's mother), they are not built for the regular season.  But I haven't seen a team with so much heart, pride and determination in such a long time.  They had no business even taking the Lakers to a game seven... so you can never count them out.

-   NBA playoff seeds for the 10-11 season, predictions of Troy G. Lightner...

         EAST

1.  Miami Heat

2.  Orlando Magic

3.  Chicago Bulls

4.  Atlanta Hawks

5.  Boston Celtics

6.  Milwaukee Bucks

7.  New York Knicks (hehe)

8.  Charlotte Bobcats

     WEST

1.  Los Angeles Lakers

2.  Denver Nuggets

3.  Oklahoma City Thunder

4.  Portland Blazers

5.  San Antonio Spurs

6.  Houston Rockets

7.  Phoenix Suns

8.  Dallas Mavericks / New Orleans Hornets (cop out)

-  Ben Rothleisberger did not deserve to be suspended at all.  There were two incidents, The first one was extremely questionable, while the second one proved that the girl was intoxicated and there was at least initial consent.  Along with the fact that there was no DNA evidence in either case, and the charges against Big Ben were dropped.  I understand the commisioner's policy, and Adam "Pacman" Jones got suspended because he was questioned by police over 10 times in 3 years and had a prior record.  Pacman Jones almost undoubtedly was involved in some shady ongoings and illegal activities while noone is even 50% positive that Ben Rothliesberger did anything illegal or "wrong".  I don't like Ben's attitude when it comes to women or the way he was choosing to live his life but the commisioner had no right to punish Ben further for crimes he may not have committed.  It shouldn't be about race under any circumstances, but I think Ben was punished because he was white, and the commisioner did not want to offend the black community by going too "easy" on him after the severe punishments he has handed down to black NFL players for off-field issues.  Now the Pittsburgh Steelers don't seem to be nearly as much of a playoff contender, the commisioner has made a very popular NFL franchise and community pay the price.  More importantly, unless a player is proven guilty in a court of law, the NFL should have no right to suspend or ban anyone from their league.  Perhaps, it's simply my wishful thinking.

-  The Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears are going to be better than you think, I think.

-  The New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays or Philadelphia Phillies will win the world series this year.  Look at how talented those teams are with their pitching and offense.  Noone else will have a chance.

-  With Andy Pettite and A-rod's health in question, A.J. burnett's awful and inconsistent year, Javier Vasquez in the bullpen for some reason even though he's at least been better than A.J. and Phil Hughes lack of experience and possible tired arm.... I'm crossing the Yankees off my list.

-  The Rays are as fast as lightning on those base paths, and although they aren't the most powerful line up, they are clutch and consistent, whilst their starting pitching is superior.  The Phillies may have Halladay, Hammels and Oswalt now, but Halladay won't be as good as Cliff Lee was last year, Cole Hammels has a great playoff record but he's been inconsistent for the last couple of years and he didnt help them win the world series last year.  And finally, Roy Oswalt loved pitching in a small town with low to no expectations, his playoff inexperience and his questionable ability to be clutch could be big factors in the post-season.  The phillies bats weren't very good against a solid yankees starting rotation in last year's world series, so we can only imagine how bad they'll do against Tampa Bay's starters.

-  The Tampa Bay Rays will win the 2010 world series.  5 years ago, the Devil Rays were still a joke in MLB, its amazing how things change so quickly. (especially in the sports world, in particularly in a sport like baseball where a small market team isn't supposed to be capable of contending.)

-   Lastly, I leave you with my 2010 NFL playoff predictions...

    AFC

1. Cincinnati Bengals ( In spite of Terrell Owens locker room antics)

2. Houston Texans   (we've been waiting...)

3. New England Patriots (I changed my mind again)

4. San Diego Chargers  (by default, and no the raiders are not going to be great this year. nor the chiefs)

5. Indianapolis Colts  (10 wins this year, I'm tellin ya.)

6. Miami Dolphins   (  who doesn't love Chad Henne?)

   NFC

1. Green Bay Packers (ask anyone.)

2. Dallas Cowboys  (lets be real, Dez was a steal.  They're going to lose in the division round anyway)

3. New Orleans Saints ( I dont know if I like this choice)

4. San Francisco 49ers  (They almost have to win the division title.)

5. New York Giants  (I'm a fan, I may be biased.)

6. Minnesota Vikings / Washington Redskins (Let's say they're tied...you be the tie-breaker!)

And now that my opinions and predictions are online, we can all look back and see how wrong I've been about everything.  Sounds like fun, can't wait, agree to disagree?  FIGHT BACK for YOUR team.  E-mail me at tgl4093@yahoo.com or send TrizzSports a message here on http://www.blogspot.com/  or even just post a comment below.  Good night everyone!!!

Melissa Gorga join 'Real Housewives NJ' ?

Welcome Melissa Gorga to the new Real Housewives of New Jersey neighborhood! Yes, we are going to get blessed with another drama maker to add to the mix of diverse women making up the cast

Melissa Gorga, the sister-in-law of current Housewife Teresa Giudice, is rumored to be the newest addition to the show. Sure not all the original cast mates will be returning to this new season (we’re thinking due to money issues), Gorga should add plenty of drama to the mix. Considering Gorga is Teresa Giudice’s sister-in-law, that is enough to keep us all entertained.

According to a "Giudice family friend" who spoke to Radar, Gorga initially approached producers to be a part of season 2. Judging from the source's information about Gorga, she seems like she'd be a great fit. "Their house is actually twice the size as Joe and Teresa's," the source said. "It's enormous! She has two live-in nannies and lives in a $4 million mansion on an exclusive lot in Montville. Teresa and Joe's house looks like a garage compared to theirs."

While there has not been an official cast announcement, we should find out real soon! What do you think? Will Melissa Gorga, Teresa Guidice’s sister-in-law be a good addition?
