she's a photographer. a creative genius. a lesbian. and apparently a bit of a law-bender? for years, i have looked up to annie leibovitz's compelling vision of photography through her stellar disney campaigns, rare celebrity photoshoots and controversial portraits. how could it be that someone so talented and so successful could end up in such large financial troubles? apparently the economy has the ability to bite just about anyone in the ass these days.
it was reported recently that leibovitz would lose the rights to her entire portfolio if she didn't payback a $24 million loan she allegedly owed by its tuesday deadline. throughout her long-lived career annie has had the opportunity to photograph everyone from the rolling stones to queen elizabeth, yoko ono and john lennon. she was the first person to ever photograph baby suri, was the woman behind the heavily frowned-upon miley cyrus vanity fair, in which young miley appeared topless (at least one of the times she did).
so how exactly did someone of her caliber end up in such a sticky situation? well apparently, leibovitz has been the victim of a long list of bad financial decisions and personal tragedies as of lately including the passing of her father, mother, losing of her long-term companion, among others.
today, on september 11, 2009, it was ruled that annie would receive an extension to pay off the loans and the rights to her $50 million portfolio.
i hope she gets her shit together, because seriously she is one of the only truly extraordinary artists left working today and is the face behind some of my personal favorite photographs ever taken: naked john lennon in fetal position next to his wife yoko ono, all of the disney "year of a million dreams" pictorials, which include celebrities gisele bundchen, jessica biel, tina fey, scarlett jo, beyonce, and a trillion others, a pregnant and nude demi moore, russian supermodel natalia vodianova as alice in wonderland for vogue, lebron james and gisele, the cast of marie antionette in costume, michael jordan, as well as a long list of inspirational non-celebrity work.
