Being a model, an actor or any type of entertainer earns you a ticket to see and be seen at the endless selection of exclusive parties, limited-seating fashion shows, and all other stylish affairs that took part during this lavish week!
Fashion week occurs in the big apple only twice a year and is put on by the current leading global fashion powerhouse IMG. IMG currently is home to the world's largest producer of fashion events, they own the top international modeling agency, and are home to industry-leading event publications for fashion insiders and fashion-related media programming! They partner up with many current top designers and marketing executives who are interesting in putting on an exciting one-of-a-kind event that reaches the most fashion-centric people on the planet.
Although they put on a wide-array of major fashion events similar to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, there is no other week quite like the one that takes part in New York City, because well... it's Manhattan! Over 60 designers united & showcased their Spring garments, in very unique ways throughout the city this year alone.
Dozens of more shows have came and gone in the past few evenings, but perhaps the most shocking 'wow factor' of fashion week had nothing to do with the fashion; rather, with the models who took part in the festivities!
As always each show came fully stocked with the usual 16-year-old, pin-thin models. However, to viewer's delightful surprise two very unexpected models were also in attendance: Kanye West's girlfriend, Amber Rose and former call-girl of Elliot Spitzer, Ashley Dupre.
Both girls do not share the common runway measurements of being 5'10 and a size zero. Actually, both are maybe 5'8 or 5'9 at most and quite, curvy relatable women. They looked beautiful on the runway and both ladies rocked their signature tattoos. Amber didn't even try and blend in with the other models by clipping in hair extensions; rather, she came out displaying her usually buzzed, bleached barely-there head of hair that we all have come to expect from her!
It was a breath of fresh air to see real women included in such an exquisite occasion that so many young girls follow so closely!
Back to the fashion side of things, it's time to give a shout out to Mr. Dennis Basso, who was the only designer whose show received a standing ovation! A-listers including Mary-Louise Parker, Joan Rivers, Ivanka Trump and Lorraine Bracco all were among those clapping in admiration for the incredible evening-gown designer!
Other designers who acquired individual attention at the tents include Narcisco Rodriguez, who received the Spring 2010 "Mercedes-Benz Presents" award. Rodriguez is returning to the iconic tents for his second year in a row only this time as the Mercedes-Benz Presents designer who is being celebrated for his dedication to lush materials, contemporary styles and avant-garde design. Narciso joins an influential group of past Mercedes-Benz Presents designers including Monique Lhuillier, Badgley Mischka, Yigal Azrouël, Red Carter and CHADO Ralph Rucci.
The always whimsical Betsey Johnson made sure to entertain and possibly scare the pants off of her show's guests! Taking place at the lovely Manhattan hotel, The Plaza, Johnson presented her typically punkish line of exquisite fabrics with an adorable feminine twist. Her signature rose and leopard prints, brights colors and tulle bows were absolutely present. The models got funky to some rock n' roll as they pranced down the runway where Betsey herself was standing. As the eccentric designer greeted fans she said, "I hope everyone had fun, because really, all I wanted to do was have a good time."
Possibly one of the most exciting aspects of the week-long extravaganza are the guests who sit beside the runways and soak in the fashion, fun and excitement. Here is a sneak peak at some of the attendees...
